Another silly question:

When looking to rent somewhere - is rent ever negotiable? I know you can't speak for everyone, but on the whole is there ever room for manoevre or will people laugh in your face?

Yes yes, I could just ask when I look round, but I just wanted to know if anyone's tried it.

you definitely can, but not by much.
if you are dealing with agents then ask if the landlord would accept X amount off a month (because the landlord won't be getting all of what the agents are, and if the agents are keen to get rid of it they will take part of that extra off their cut) but I wouldn't risk asking for more than 100 or 150 off per month.
If you're delaing with the landlord it depends how quick they want to get rid of it.
I would always ask tho - all they can say is that they're not ready to negotiate on that property and you will have to pay the full price.

Yes definitely. My boy and I got our landlord down by £50 a month...if the landlord likes you and you can move in quickly it's worth his while.
